Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Author (1772–1834)

Born in Devonshire, England, the son of a clergyman, he attended Christ’s Hospital school and Cambridge. Over the years, he made acquaintances and friends in Charles Lamb, Robert Southey and, most notably, William Wordsworth with whom he collaborated to publish Lyrical Ballads. About his 27th year, he became ill and treated himself with opium, which led to addiction. Afterward, his writing in verse became much less, but he nonetheless went on to write a variety of works, including his memorable Biographia Literaria. His best known poems are “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” “Kubla Khan” and “Christabel.”
