Francisco Goya
Artist (1746–1828)
Born in Zaragoza, Spain, Francisco Goya studied and traveled in Madrid and Rome before taking work in the Spanish Royal Tapestry Workshop where he designed patterns. At the age of 40, he was appointed painter to Charles II and afterward did many portraits. In the years that followed, his work became increasing dark and grotesque, productive of such works as The Colossus, Saturn Devouring His Son, The Third of May, 1808, and the aquatint series The Disasters of War. |
