Arnold Böcklin
Artist (1827–1901)
Arnold Böcklin was born October 16, 1827 in Basel, Switzerland to a salesman and a wealthy heiress. After showing a great talent in drawing, he was sent in 1845 to attend an art academy in Düsseldorf. In his early work, he concentrated on dramatic depictions of the Swiss Alps and for a time came under the influence of French painters who directed him toward open-air painting and more objective, less emotionally colored views. But the revolution of 1848 disgusted him with French influences and he returned to his earlier mode of painting. Returning to Switzerland, he studied for a time under the great landscape painter Alexandre Calame. Two years later, he went to Rome and commenced more mythological and symbolic subjects. For most of his life, he labored with money problems but in his last years his works became very popular. He died in Fiesole, Italy on January 16, 1901. |
